| Kayaking
Instruction |
Sea kayaking is great
fun! Even beginners feel safe and comfortable in these fast and stable
boats. Compared to other recreational activities, not many skills are
necessary to start your adventure, at least as long as weather and sea
conditions are right or you are accompanied by a guide. As soon you start
paddling alone or with a friend, renting a kayak or paddling with your
own boat, more skills are required.
Weather and ocean
conditions change rapidly, even in summer. Tides and currents can become
extremely hazardous and, if you don't know the basics about navigation,
how to read charts and interpret tide and current tables, this fun adventure
could soon become threatening.
Our skilled sea kayaking
instructors, working many years as lead guides under every possible weather
and water condition, will teach you the fundamentals of sea kayaking.
We provide all kayaks, safety gear and transportation. Wet suits are available
for rental from $20 to $24.
Full day, $139.00
CDN plus 7 % GST, Lunch included.
2 Days $279.00 CDN plus 7% GST, Lunch included.
Topics covered include:
- The dynamics of paddling in a coast environment
- Self rescues and assisted rescues
- Paddling strokes and techniques
- Bracing techniques
- Safety equipment and its applications
- Interpretet weather forecast
- Reading nautical charts
- Tides and currents
- Radio use

| Seakayaking |
Sea kayaking along
the Discovery Islands, the Coast Mountains of British Columbia and Johnstone
Strait is world class.
Orcas (killer whales),
dolphins, humpback and mink whales, bald eagles, bears, seals and sea
lions can be observed while paddling the clearest waters on earth.
Our season starts
very early, compared to other destinations in the province. We have 50%
less rain than the West Coast of Vancouver Island and it is usually much
warmer than anywhere else in B.C.
The pre and after season is our favorate time of the year. Try one of
our Discovery Islands or Desolation Sound Adventures in May, June and
September and you will see, this time of year is a wonderful time to paddle,
with very few other people around. The stable summer weather with very
little rain and the calm ocean makes this part of British Columbia perfect
for paddlers with or without experience. This area is well known for the
natural beauty and the exciting variety of wildlife. |
Our guides
are highly skilled naturalists with an amazing knowledge of wildlife,
plants and native history. Trained by the Sea Kayak Alliance and(or
Association) of British Columbia and in Wilderness First Aid, we
offer safe and educational kayak tours.
Lots of fun
and our wonderful food, freshly prepared each day, are two more
good reasons to paddle with Coastal Spirits.
We use only
first class equipment and the best sea kayaks on the market, which
help beginners feel safe and comfortable. |
| The Whales |
 |
"Killer
whale" is definitely not the right word for this beautiful, very intelligent
animal with its highly developed social structures.
Johnstone Strait,
located between northern Vancouver Island and the Coast Mountains
hosts the largest Orca population in the world.
With our sea kayaks,
we have the highest success rate watching these amazing animals in
their natural environment. |
The
mountains along Johnstone Strait, the beautiful islands and the wonderful
crystal clear ocean create a perfect environment for sea kayaking
and whale watching.
Bears, bald eagles, dolphins, seals and sea lions
are other species you will see during our trips. Gray whales are also
seen quiet frequently.
The right picture shows one of our kayaks,
approached by "Henry" the big Gray Whale. He spent about 3 months
feeding in the crystal clear waters of Quadra Island.
